Prof. Martin Daunton Offers CUHK a Different Perspective


Prof. Martin Daunton, Cambridge University’s Master of Trinity Hall and Professor of Economic History, was the honoured guest speaker for the Global Leader Series talk on 19 September. Organised by the CUHK Business School’s Alumni and Corporate Affairs Office, Prof. Daunton’s lecture was titled “This Time It’s Different: History and the Financial Crisis”, offering a historical perspective of the current financial crisis. It was met with great enthusiasm, stirring questions from the 150 attendees present. The talk served to connect alumni with the Business School, and formed a foundation for future collaboration between the CUHK and Cambridge University.

Much Anticipation for the Upcoming Center BiG
Official Launch and the Third Forum

The Center for Business Innovation and Globalisation (Center BiG) will be celebrating its official launch on 20 October at the CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute. Center BiG will be holding the third forum that day with a series of noteworthy presentations and discussions. The highlights are expected to be two keynote presentations on the “Innovation” and “Globalisation” of Chinese companies growing and expanding outside of China. These will be followed by the “BiG Dialog” featuring five thought leaders, who will be taking questions from the floor. Register online to join the celebratory launch and forum.

Beta Gamma Sigma Chapter Honorees are Named


Every year the CUHK Business School presents two alumni, one from the MBA program and one from the BBA, with the prestigious Beta Gamma Sigma award in recognition of their outstanding business leadership and contributions to society. This year’s honorees, Mr. Nelson Yip, Chief Executive of EP Venture and the Founder of Unleash Foundation, and Mrs. Bethy Tam, Head of Governance and Strategic Initiatives at Standard Chartered Bank, are both highly accomplished individuals in their respective fields, with stories that demonstrate what we are all capable of if we apply ourselves.

MBA Pre-term Dinner Marks the Start of a Bright
New Academic Year

On 31 August, newly admitted MBA students, staff and special guests gathered for the MBA Pre-term Dinner in the magnificent ballroom at the Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, Sha Tin. Everyone enjoyed the inspiring words of our eminent speakers, including the Associate Dean (Graduate Studies) and MBA Director, Prof. Michael Ferguson, and Honorary Professor of the CUHK Business School, Prof. Liu Mingkang. Other highlights included the presentation of the Beta Gamma Sigma Chapter Honoree Award to Mr. Nelson Yip. It was a good opportunity for students and teachers to mingle and for the freshmen to gain insight into the rich history of the Business School as well as its vision for the future.

The Faculty Inauguration Ceremony Sets the Tone for Undergraduate Freshmen


Three hundred eager freshmen attended this year’s Faculty Inauguration Ceremony on 10 September, welcomed by the Dean and various members of the Faculty. The highlight of the ceremony was an inspirational speech by Beta Gamma Sigma Chapter Honoree Award winner Mrs. Bethy Tam. A 1983 BBA graduate in Marketingand current Head of Governance and Strategic Initiatives at Standard Chartered Bank, Mrs. Tam shared her personal recipe for success to the delight of all those present.

The New Era and New Business Entrepreneurs Conference Prompts Insightful Discussion

The New Era and New Business Entrepreneurs Conference held on 15 September met with an enthusiastic response from 350 participants. Co-organised by BridgeWay Business Builder and Broker Co. Ltd. and the CUHK Center for Entrepreneurship, the aim of the conference was to facilitate the sharing of knowledge on the subject of entrepreneurship in Hong Kong. The information-packed day-long event featured speeches from successful entrepreneurs, including CUHK alumni, and discussions on a range of business-related topics. The energy in the room was palpable, demonstrating that the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in Hong Kong.

CONNECT Magazine Focuses on Corporate Governance
in China


The Business School magazine CONNECT, produced by the CUHK Business School’s Marketing and Communications Office, offers a platform through which Business School staff and guest writers can share their business insight. The latest edition, Vol. 5, 2012, focuses on corporate governance in China, and features a series of informative and interesting articles on the subject. We believe this issue showcases the Business School’s proud expertise in China and we hope it will help those conducting business in the region.
